The Writing Process Mrs. Ramjan – (9th Grade )
1. Prewriting
a. Use a writing prompt (topic) to get you started.
b. Brainstorm ideas about the chosen topic.
c) Gather information about the chosen topic.
Where do you get ideas/information? Remember, research, interview, observe or imagine.
2. Writing your first draft
Ask yourself – What is my reason for writing? And , Who is my audience?
a. Write you first Draft -rough copy. Don't worry if you've gone off topic, just keep writing.
b. Choose your ideas (from # 1) and develop them – main idea with supporting details.
c. A good introduction to a paragraph is a fact, a question, or a quotation.
d. A good ending makes the reader satisfied. It summarizes the entire paragraph or story or it can be a suggestion or a recommendation.
3. Revising
a. Revising your work is about making "big picture" changes. You are trying to improve what you have written.
b. You might remove whole sections, rewrite entire paragraphs, or add information.
c. You might rearrange sentences or paragraphs.
d. Change Vocabulary- substitute a "small" word with a different word from a thesaurus or dictionary.
e. Replace or remove overused words.
f. Are any of my sentences hard to understand? Rewrite them to make your thoughts clear.
g. Which words could you cut to make a sentence stronger?
h. Ensure that language suits your purpose and audience.
